Most puppy owners have read all the puppy books and get their puppy off to a solid start with crate training. Even if you don't use the crate often, teaching your puppy to understand confinement will be beneficial for later skills in life such as going to a grooming shop, veterinary clinic or traveling on an airplane.

Crate training can seem intimidating at first, but one trick I use with all my puppies to get them loving their crate from Day 1 is to feed every meal in the crate and pair that with a cue word to go into the crate (i.e. "Fido, crate" or "Fido, kennel").

Feeding meals in the crate gives the puppy a reason to want to go into the crate willingly and helps them associate the crate with something positive. Within a week of using the cue word and putting the bowl of food in the crate, you will find your pup runs into the crate happily on command while waiting for their next meal.
